Reaaya is a long-term intergenerational residential center in Qatar that invites seniors above the age of 60 and orphans between the age of 5-18 to share one roof, by having seniors care for the younger aged group through mentoring and interacting.
The intergenerational center is an interactive platform that is based on each individual's characteristics, and their interaction in both groups individual and common spaces. The strategy for this project is to design a complex that integrates two contrasting users, responding to the different needs of two dissimilar groups: seniors and orphans.
The goal is to create a convergence between seniors and orphans through an integrated modern system of care and shelter to achieve family development and social solidarity. By creating a home-like space that is centered around bringing new energy for seniors , knowledge and enthusiasm for orphans , a new family structure is built.
Site
To combat or approach this project, the site was chosen in a calm compound which is suited for the Reaaya centre. It is surrounded by a school, nursery, mosque, mall and other residential neighborhoods. A section of the site is being repurposed for the needs of the seniors and orphans.
Exterior
The exterior of the building is designed to reflect the concept of Reaaya by using elements and materials of old Qatari architecture by rendering a space of convergence, interaction, energy, and security that is also reflected in the interior of the space. Inspired by Le Corbusiers architecture system, the existing building is a group of 3 separate villas, that will be bridged or merged together to create a residential centre.
Space planning and concept
The space aims to cater for 2 contrasting groups. The social spaces plan shows the convergence of 2 dissimilar groups and the points of connection between them. The points of connection are in both the interactive and learning spaces which include , Majlis, library, shared lounge, sound studio, painting studio, and indoor/outdoor playroom. The users of the space have a significant difference in their energy ratio and it is reflected in the space planning, by having the interactive and learning spaces. Going through the different spaces in the convergence floor, the energy goes from very low to high. It transfers from a very calm soft mood to an active and vibrant one. To adjust the levels, a common ground is created.
